Sikonge FDC 2021 Update

The college has recovered well from the effects of the fire and is now back to full effectiveness under Mr Enoch's leadership.

A recent development is the production of steel furniture by metalwork students. Its sale locally provides a useful boost to college income and also gives students valuable insight into business practices. FUM helped provide the initial stock of steel.

The old motorbike supplied by FUM many years ago was beyond repair so a new motorbike has been provided.

Walking for Water 2021

This was to raise money for providing the clinic and new maternity unit at Kiloleni
with a reliable source of clean water.

Well over £8000 was raised, a great success. With help from other FUM funds a borehole has been successfully drilled to provide a reliable supply of much needed good quality water.

Medical Electives 2021 Update

Latest news Sadly, travel restrictions due to the covid pandemic mean that our new group of student doctors have had to withdraw from their scheduled Elective Placements in Tanzania.

It was very disappointing that the elective of our 2020 student doctor volunteer Jessica Eardley had to be cancelled because of the covid pandemic in UK. Jessica instead spent the time working in her hard-pressed University hospital.

We had been delighted to announce that four UK medical students had opted to spend their electives in Tanzania for 4 weeks during during May/June 2021. Alas these will not now take place.
Rachel and Anna were to be based at Urambo Hospital supervised by our good friend Dr Swakala while Rachael and Alastair were to serve at Ndala Hospital in Nzega District with Dr Mgalega.

Mambali Family 2021 Update

We are extremely grateful to our good friend Mr Venance Gomegwa for designing and supervising the construction of better housing for the family. It has taken a great deal of his time and energy but the outcome is excellent and the family are delighted.

Kiloleni Clinic 2021 Update

Kiloleni_maternity_unit.jpgIn October 2021 FUM received a very generous, anonymous donation that will cover the cost of building a much needed 4-bed maternity unit next to the clinic. Building work was started in 2022 after the rains had finished.

The District Council will cover the cost of the internal equipment needed.

Thanks to the success of our fundraising walks in 2021 FUM was able to fund the successful drilling of a deep borehole. This is 2.8km from the clinic so the 2022 walks will be focused on a solar powered pumping system to take the water to the clinic and maternity unit.

In 2021 the clinic used its annual £200 FUM support to buy a year's supply of gas cylinders for its vaccine fridge. This is especially necessary to prevent deterioration in the warm climate.

Kamalendi Clinic 2021 Update

The clinic was recently connected to the mains electricity supply. They used their FUM £200 donation to buy a medical inspection lamp and and a hand drier.

The village has also been busy making concrete blocks with the aim of building a maternity delivery room.

The delivery room is needed because the village is 30km from Urambo Hospital and the road can be impassable in the rainy season.

Ibambo Clinic & Health Centre 2021 Update

Thanks to receiving a generous, anonymous donation FUM was able to tile the floors in the clinic and paint the internal walls. Not only does it make the floors much easier to keep clean and hygenic but it also makes the working environment much more pleasant. Previously the floors were bare concrete.

Isegenhe Clinic 2021 Update

Thanks to the fundraising efforts of our sponsored walkers we raised enough money for the borehole project to go ahead. Our good friend Mr Lucky Mgeni, a water engineer, supervised the whole project. A hydrological survey identified a site for test drilling and this proved successful with a good flow rate found. Laboratory tests showed the water to be of good quality.

Nzega Hospital 2021 Update

Four of the 6 nurses below passed all their college exams and so are eligible to enter the exams for the government National Licence scheme. These take place at a small number of designated centres and the students have elected to take theirs at Mwanza, the nearest centre to Nzega. As well as the £50 exam fee they also have accommodation and food costs for the exam week, another £50. FUM and our colleagues at FON are sharing this cost.
Results will not be know until the summer. If they pass then they will be fully licensed to practise as nurses.
